Vianden | A Fairytale Castle

Hidden somewhere in between the clouds, Vianden castle looks like it came out straight from a fairytale. Even though Vianden is a tiny and slightly isolate little town it has immersive history and every corner has a story to tell. The town was built around 698BC how crazy is that?! One of the best things about travelling is to be able to visit places with enormous history and culture just like Vianden, where you leave the place and feel like you have gained something that is above anything materialistic.

Our trip to Vianden was completely last minute, after spending two days in
Luxembourg city my friends and I decided that we really wanted to see that castle that's in pretty much every poster on the hotel. So after having a good breakfast we hit the road for Vianden and for another adventure. The journey from Luxembourg city was approximately 1 hour and 10/15 minutes not as long as we thought.

As soon as we reached I was astonished by how beautiful Vianden was. I felt like someway somehow I travelled through time and ended up in the medieval times, it truly seemed that the time has stop. I was in complete awe walking among those little graphic streets thinking what happened there thousands of years ago. Something that could inspire even the most uninspired person. Even Victor Hugo was captivated by the magic of Vianden and hid away from the world there, in his little house that is now a museum.

Whilst strolling through the streets and observing every little thing, my friend pointed out the castle on the top of the mountain. The Vianden Castle, as soon I looked at it, it took my breath away I have never seen another castle like that so majestic and absolutely beautiful. I took a minute to admire it and take few photos and then quickly followed the trail that leads the way to the castle. When I finally I arrived into the gates of the castle I felt like a little queen ready to enter and mark my territory but the same time I felt so small next  to it.

The Castle was built between the 11th and 14th Century on the foundations of a Roman castle and a Carolingian refuge. This Castle bears the Hohenstaufen characteristics and is one of the largest and best feudal residences of the Roman and Gothic eras in Europe. That’s pretty fascinating.

As soon as we entered the palace-castle we explore saw the armour that knights used wear what me and my friends noticed is that even though the armour seemed to be pretty good for battles there was nothing that covers the knight’s private parts besides a cloth which we found weird and well funny. Maybe knights at those times didn’t care much about procreating so that’s why they were not bothered? We will never know.

The more I wandered in between the different rooms and different floors I was in more and more awe every room had an untold story to tell, every part of  it had a piece of human history waiting to be unfold. How magical could it get?!

Vianden is truly a magical city, and the palace-castle looks like it came out of a fairytale. I highly recommend visiting to anyone who likes history, culture and adventure.

  12. As a huge fan of history Vianden is the castle of my dreams, the spiraling turrets are a wondrous thing of beauty. I love that beneath the walls are reminders of the people that once roamed the halls so long ago. Plus you know I love fairytales.
